On Wilfred In The City, I did my own take on the title track, I’m In Love With The City. I extended the original version with a longer intro and a lengthened middle section in the tune. The outro also got a makeover. From the middle of the song, I brought in a couple sound sources that took me by surprise. In my old basement studio, I found a plastic Casio Midi Saxophone that had a selection of its own sounds onboard. When I went to blow into it, I found that the ‘proper’ sounds had all disappeared and what I as left with was a horrendous, screaching sound. “Perfect,” I thought. I immediately went onto my recording session for Wilfred In The City and started work on a fresh track. I more or less just blew a bunch of nonsense. Then I threw it into a whole bunch of reverb and all of a sudden it sounded palatable! When I played it to my 5-year-old grandson, he said, “That’s the LRT!!!” (Edmonton’s light rail transit). Then I thought I would play around with the handheld Korg Monotron that Nik got me for my birthday. Crazy! I couldn’t believe the fat sounds coming out of that little toy, and I managed to get the perfect first takes. Unbelievable! The Casio horn will probably never get played again. It sounds that terrible. It’s dead, man. The Monotron, though, is quite a little wonder and I plan to return to it lots! The rest of the tracks – vocals, synths, electric and acoustic guitars – were done by me.
