about

This song started when I was sitting around with my guitar while the late news was on TV. I was playing the little call-and-response riff that became the main instrument feature on the song. It was one of those songs that just takes over . . . I don't really remember how the rest happened. I think I was writing some of the lyrics as I was recording it in my home studio. The lyrics had meaning to me with respect to an uneasiness I have been feeling about the world in general. Why can't we just all get along?

As I was recording this, I remembered that my friend Mark Korven played the duduk, an ancient double-reed woodwind instrument that has its roots in Armenia. Mark is a film composer who plays a variety of odd instruments that he employs in his soundtracks for film and television. I remembered the haunting sound of the duduk, and I decided to visit his website where he demonstrates the playing of the instrument. I recorded a bit of his playing on my iPhone and flew it into a track of the recording I was working on for "I'll Never Understand Why". It was amazing! The key of what he was playing fit perfectly with my song. The tempo worked beautifully, too. It was then that I contacted Mark in Ontario and asked him if he would play duduk on my tune. "Sure!" I sent Mark my tracks, and he sent me back his. That's how it worked, and I think it worked wonderfully well. After Mark recorded his part for me, I found his name on the credits for playing duduk on the soundtrack of Niobi Thompson's documentary "The Great Human Odyssey". Mark Korven has recently had accolades for his soundtrack in the movie "The Witch".

lyrics

I’ll Never Understand Why by Wilfred Kozub

I’ll never understand why
I’ll never understand why
I’ll never understand why - why
No I’ll never understand why

I live my life in this world
So many people like you and me
Why can’t we see I to I?
Don’t understand but I try

It’s hard to see past ourselves
I don’t know why we can’t all belong
I’ll never understand why - why
No I’ll never understand why

We live like we’re in a dream
A life on earth like there’s never been
Don’t see beyond our own lies
It’s becoming reality

This is the best world we ever had
How did we mess it up so bad?
I’ll never understand why
No I’ll never understand why
