about

I had already written and recorded much of I Don’t Go Out. One night while I was watching the late tv news, I found myself playing around with some chords on my nylon string guitar and then started singing ‘I don’t go out . . .”. The song felt perfect as a bossa nova tune. When it came to recording the bossa version, I found that I had started the song with what was the ending in the original I Don’t Go Out. Then I brought the idea back again in the middle of the tune, and yet again at the end. I’m pretty heavily influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and I’ve always been drawn to the soft voice style of bossa nova singers. Some of the piano clusters that I play also come from a Jobim and Sergio Mendes sensibility from having
listened to a lot of those artists’ music. Brett Miles played a fantastic tenor sax solo – it was just what I was hoping for when we went into the studio.
Nik got great sounds off Brett’s sax so that you can feel the warmth of his playing, just as if you were standing right beside him. Jamie plays the nylon string guitar on this. Vocals and keyboards are done by me. I love how this song turned out.

lyrics

I Don’t Go Out (Bossa)
by Wilfred Kozub

I don’t go out
Too much work that needs to be done
And anyhow, it’s my choice
Don’t need to have fun

I don’t go out
Simply said, I stay in my head
And I’m all right – that’s what I said,
I’ll be all right

Did I say something I didn’t mean?
Don’t let rumours cool our thing
Can’t go where I might be seen

I don’t go out
Just need a few more days to myself
Sort it out . . . forget the past
Is that too much to ask?

Remember when we laughed at the same things
Remember when we were one and the same
How could we ever let that go?
I knew you and you knew me inside out
We didn’t have to go too far to find that out
It was supernatural

I don’t go out
There is no compromise this time
Unless of course you change your mind
And I change mine

I don’t go out
Don’t go out alone (I don’t go out)
But, hey, what about you?
