about

"33 Revolutions" was the last song that I wrote for this album. Since this is an anniversary album on two counts (our 10th album as well as the 33 1/3 year anniversary of the first Wilfred N & the Grown Men vinyl record release), I wanted to be sure that I had an instrumental piece on it. Many of our albums have an instrumental song.

I did the basic parts of this song in one evening, working quite spontaneously in putting together a simple drum track with keyboards. I put down a little bit of my own guitar playing. Then I took what I had and doubled the length of it. At that point, it was about 6 minutes long, and I felt that it was a good start. I called my pal Jamie Philp to see if he would come over the next day and just 'do something' on my simple bed recording. I suggested he bring his usual rock guitar gear and some cool pedals. Then I asked him if he still had his old electric sitar. "Maybe bring that, too."

Jamie came over and I recorded him simply reacting to the song that I had started. He immediately crunched down into some heavy guitar rhythms, then added some simple parts here and there, leaving lots of room for the song to breathe. Subtle. When it came to adding the electric sitar parts, Jamie again played just the right amount of stuff, keeping it simple and adding a bit of intrigue. It was just right. He added some parts that I felt really made the song special.

I asked to Clint Frazier to come in and play on a few of my songs for the album. He didn't know he would be playing on "33 Revolutions". I played it for him one time, and then I just asked him to go for it! Just react! That's what he did, and that's what you hear on this track!

Around the time that Clint came in to play his drums, I recorded some vocal parts without actual lyrics. I have always loved unison singing like I used to listen to on records by Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. That's what I was going for here. Do you hear that?
